Annotation
A tool used to engage readers, increase reading comprehension and record responses to complex texts. Mark up the pages using the following 5 techniques.
1. Circle new characters, people, groups, or organizations.
Use the text to add character traits (personality) based on their speech, thoughts, effects on others, actions, and looks (S.T.E.A.L.).
2. Box unknown words
Add synonyms based on context clues or look up definitions.
3. underline the main idea/thesis statement
Key details provide insight into the argument or thesis of the text.
4. Star Key Details or memorable quotes
Quotes that add important meaning or strike an emotional chord are important to return to.
5. make notes in the margins
